What it costs, when to do it, what happens if it has already expired, and why you leave the centre with a document that lets you keep driving.
When renewal is due
The date is printed on the licence itself, in box 4b. Up to the age of 65 a category B licence is renewed every ten years; after that, every five. Professional categories (C, D and E) run on shorter cycles.
You can renew it up to three months before it expires without losing a single day: the new licence starts when the old one ends.
What if it has already expired?
It can still be renewed, and there is no fine or penalty for doing it late. What you cannot do is drive while it is expired, so if yours has run out, come on foot or by public transport.
What it costs
| Procedure | Price |
|---|---|
| Renewal (includes €24.58 in DGT fees) | €73.58 |
| Renewal for over-70s (exempt from fees) | €49 |
| First licence | €49 |
| Exchange of a foreign licence | €49 |
What to bring
- A valid ID card, NIE or passport.
- Your old driving licence.
- The glasses or contact lenses you drive with.
- A medical report if you take regular medication or have a pacemaker, hearing aid or prosthesis.
Do not bring a photograph: we take it here and it is included.
What the examination involves
It takes about twenty minutes. We check visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, reflexes and coordination in a short psychometric test, and review any medical history that might affect driving.
We then file the result electronically with the DGT the same day. You do not need to go to a traffic office.
The provisional certificate
Before you leave we hand you a provisional certificate valid for three months. With it you can drive perfectly normally while the DGT produces and sends the definitive licence.
The new licence arrives by post at your home within those three months. If the deadline passes and it has not arrived, you can claim it.
