Exchanging a foreign driving licence: how it works and what it costs

Driving licences

If you drive on a licence from another country, sooner or later you will have to exchange it. Here is the procedure, and which part we handle.

Who has to exchange

If you are legally resident in Spain and hold a licence issued abroad, you may drive on it for a limited period from the moment you take up residence here. After that it must be exchanged for the Spanish licence.

Spain has exchange agreements with EU countries and with a fair number of countries outside it. The list is kept by the DGT and changes from time to time: if you are unsure about your case, ask us and we will look into it together.

What we do

The exchange costs €49 and covers both parts: the medical examination and filing the case with the DGT. You do not have to book an appointment at a traffic office or fill in forms.

  • We carry out the medical and psychometric assessment, as with any licence.
  • We take the photograph here.
  • We open and submit the exchange file to the DGT.
  • We give you the receipt so you can keep driving.

What to bring

  • Your driving licence from your country, still valid.
  • Your identity document or passport, and your NIE.
  • The glasses or contact lenses you drive with.

How long it takes

The examination is done on the day, without an appointment. From there the timings depend on the DGT, which resolves the case and issues the Spanish licence. In the meantime you drive with the paperwork we give you.

We can see you in Spanish, Catalan, English, French and German. If your documents are in another language, bring them anyway and we will look.

Shall we answer it in person?

We are at 160 Carrer de Bolívia, Monday to Friday.
